ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN | Berlin Vertical

The design project "A tower for Berlin" examines the high-rise building type and its social, formal and structural qualities. Starting from the idea to build a vertical city, experimental concepts on spatial and programmatic consolidation are to be investigated and sculptural strategies of composition for positive and negative space tested. The task of the project in the main studies is the design of a 120 meter high towering building at Berlin's East railway station. The area around the station is primarily determined by its developed infrastructure for rail, bus and boat traffic. The conceptual basis for the design are diagrammatic maps showing perceptual geographical information. For example, the horizontal viewing areas between the tower and surrounding buildings are examined and recorded graphically at various heights above the ground. The differently shaped fields of view in each case allow a 360 degree view, ranging from the lowest to the highest level of the tower. The contoured fields are converted to trimmed plates and then stacked. The resutling object, which is a height model of the different fields of view, defines the outer shape of the skyscraper to be designed. This analysis leads to the further processing in the design either to a framework of horizontally layered surfaces, or to a vertical structure with mutually interpenetrating spacial structure.
