MEDIA DESIGN | MAYA workshop | perForm

The program MAYA is now recognized as one of the leading programs in the area of digital designing in architecture. Its node-based program structure allows both accurate polygon and NURBS modeling, as well as animation, physically correct light situations, etc. MAYA is convincing, especially the possibility of simulating real physical processes such as gravity, wind, friction, deformation, etc., which themselves are easy to use, intuitively understood and applied. In this workshop basic knowledge of 3D modeling will be taught and built upon by testing simple physical simulations. A particular attention will be for the ANIMATION. We will test the creation of simple mobile, kinetic structures and models that are regulated and animated by means of FORWARD KINEMATICS, INVERSE KINEMATICS, DEFORMERS, CONSTRAINTS, etc. Those who learn to master these tools will have the ability to create controllable structures and architectural elements, which can respond to changing environmental conditions such as wind, humidity, and solar radiation, etc. The focus is on the future architecture of performance.

Task

Each drawing emerges from a process. However, the importance that this process has for the conception and perception of the drawing can vary considerably. In this project, the aspect of the process should become a central category for drawing. The drawing in this case is understood to be the result of a specific manufacturing process controlled by parameters. Thereby the range of drawings, which are the result of an almost choreographic movement, through notations, conveying real or fictional movements, procedures and processes extends to reflect processes right up to automatically generated drawings; the results of indirectly guided instructions in Maya (gravity, parenting, inverse kinematics, etc.).

The investigation is to develop one's own specific drawing method and individual movement recording, which form the basis for the design and construction of a digital, kinetic apparatus. The information generated by this device will be captured as individual prints. Pay attention to issues such as repetition and difference, symmetry and asymmetry, sharpness and blur, random and system, control and disorder, frozen music, dance, the nervous stroke, panache, slowness …
Look for the representation of temporal processes, which can be described with verbs such as expansion, contraction, vibration, rotation, clashing, wandering, callipering, interfering ...
